If you take a look at one’s resume, then it’s very much possible that you’d find photography listed under the hobby section. That’s because it makes one think to be having an artistic thinking and also helps you fill up your empty resume. But most of these photographers are “social freaks” types who treat their Smartphone as their camera and their only assignment is to keep updating their Instagram account daily and make sure that their Facebook cover photo is not outdated. They make up a good share of the Smartphone users and correspondingly there are many camera apps in the store that appeal to them. But for the serious photographers, there’s hardly anything that they can count to be useful. Professional photography is not only a piece of art but a model based on many calculations as well. So if you’re not good at mathematics, don’t worry as we’ve got the right teacher for you!

I am talking about the iOS app called Douglas Photo Calculator that has been developed by Douglas Software. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and requires iOS 5.0 or any later version of the OS. This app has also been optimized for iPhone 5.

dou1This app is shows “behind the scenes” of a photograph. When you’re using a professional camera, then there are many terms such as Depth of Field, Diffraction, Hyperfocal Distance, Angle of View, etc. All these parameters need to be calculated accurately before you click a picture. So what this app helps you for is that you don’t have to make the calculations now. All you have to do is enter other parameters such as file format, resolution, focal length, etc. It’s not that you can’t calculate these parameters yourself, but you’ll have to consult your camera’s manual book every time and that’s not a wise solution. Moreover, if you’re an amateur photographer, then most of the amateurs don’t go forth due to these problems and half the interest in photography is already lost in this exhaustion.

This app is nothing like a glamorous canvas from a photo shoot. You’re dealing with the off-picture statistics and therefore the UI of this app is pretty neat and clean. There’s a help file available in the app as well which will guide you and introduce to the different terms so that you can use the app as easily as possible.

The app is available in the App Store for $6.99. I know that’s a good significant amount for an app and that’s why this app is only for serious professional photographers. Even if you buy this app, it will be like written in an alien language for you; will go over your head. The app works with Digital as well as conventional film cameras and is available in English, German, French, Italian and Spanish. So if you’re real serious about your passion, make sure you have the right tool to paint your story!

Pros: intuitive UI; accurate calculations; multi-lingual; works with digital as well as conventional film cameras; easy to use.

Cons: none.

I will give this app 4.5 out of 5 stars.
