Circle. One of the biggest inventions in the history of mankind is that of a wheel and it was obviously a 3D circle. Our home, planet Earth is spherical in shape but how do we draw it in our drawing book; yes, a circle. In fact, every planet of this solar system and the even the Sun is circular. If we look at the world around us, we’ll find that this circular shape has a great significance in our life. But wait a minute! What is this all about? Why am I talking about the significance of a shape that I failed to understand in my high school? Well, there is a reason and it’s a good one.
I’m talking about circles because the guest of our show tonight is a circle, a small circle that’s fighting to survive in the world of the bigger ones. I’m talking about an Indie iOS app called ROTO that has been developed by WerakuGames. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and requires iOS 6.0 or any later version of the OS. This app has also been optimized for iPhone 5, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
ROTO is an amazing circular puzzle or I should say puzzle of circles or should I say it to be the journey of a small town circle in the world of big ones. Whatever you call it, this puzzle is nothing but pure fun – just like the tagline of new Indian Ocean album. There’s a small circle that keeps on revolving on the periphery of a bigger circle and you can see some more circles and stars on the remaining platform. A tap will make that small circle jump and the exit point decides where it will land. Your mission in each level is to collect all the stars and reach the last circle with a flag on it. But it’s not as easy as it looks!
In a game spanning over more than 80 levels, there are enough twists and turns to keep you busy all through the journey. In each level, there are some obstacles such as rotating round saws in between two circles which can sometimes be in a reciprocating motion as well. So you have to jump so that you can land on the next circle, collect the stars and make sure you don’t hit the saw or your point of existence will be no more. To add some more spice, there are some special circles such as a grey circle which fades to nothing and an orange circle which pushes you back just like big fat belly would do when a small kid jumps on it.
The developers have approached the game with a very clear idea to provide the users with pure gaming, nothing else. They’ve used minimal art and colours. In fact, the whole game has been painted on a black & white canvas, except the stars and orange circles. And this idea has worked in their favour. There’s elegance in the neat and clean design of the app that catches the eye of the player.
So if there are still any doubts in your mind, I would suggest you to download the game and clear them yourself. Enjoy the game!
The app is available for free in the App Store.
Pros: neat and clean design; minimal art; 80 levels; challenging and addictive gameplay; free.
Cons: none.
I will give this app 4.5 out of 5 stars.
