Learning a new language is a very difficult task and mastering it takes someone’s lifetime. When you’re born as a child, you start learning your native language and when you’re around 15 years old, you’re as fluent as anyone else. But still when you meet new people, you learn new words and new styles for the same language. So when it takes so many years for one to learn his/her native language, you can understand how much time it will take to learn a new language. Nowadays, people are travelling globally for business and there are many who work in other countries away from home. Language is always an issue and finding a teacher is not a good move. You’re already very busy and finding time for classes is very difficult. But learning it on your own is nothing but a waste of time. So why don’t you learn it on your iPhone!

The idea about learning a new language on your iPhone stems from the fact that the latest iOS app called Learn French has been released in the App Store. The app has been developed by Loquella and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and requires iOS 5.1 or any later version of the OS.

As the name suggests, Learn French is for learning French only. The app isn’t tracing the traditional method of teaching a new language because when you’re new in a town, conversation is the new problem. So even if you know the exact words, due to accent you won’t get them. So the app teaches you words in the correct accent they are used.

The learning pattern has been steeply designed. Each lesson consists of an audio of 100-200 minutes with lyrics going on the screen. In the first few lessons, you are introduced to new vocabulary using some common dialogues that are being used. So it’s a two-way benefit: you get to learn vocabulary as well as some common dialogues which you can use in conversation. You have to speak out those words loudly so that you can grasp the correct tone. In the next lessons, same words are used again and again in different ways so that you can understand how to use them.

There are many advantages of using Learn French. First you don’t have to register anywhere. Second, you’re not starting from the basics as they won’t work during interaction. You’re starting initially from a high point but a good grasp of the basics is also ensured by repeating words and emphasizing on proper pronunciation.

While the first lesson is available for free, each of the next lessons is available for $2.99 via in-app purchase. You can also buy the complete pack for $24.99. I think it’s a good one-time investment and a time saving option as well.

Pros: no registration required; good learning programmes for beginners; first lesson for free.

Cons: none.

I will give this app 4.5 out of 5 stars.
