2013 was a fantastic year for smartphones, with everything from the iPhone 5s and 5c to the HTC One, LG G2, and the Samsung Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note all being available to buy in the last 12 months. However, things move very fast in the world of smartphones and tablets, and fans are already anticipating the amazing gadgets we can expect to see in 2014.
If you can’t wait until next year, here’s a quick look at all the releases and rumours to look forward to in the New Year:
- HTC One 2
The actual name of the successor to the hugely popular HTC One smartphone is not yet known, although predicted to be either HTC One 2, HTC One (2014) or even HTC M8, but the device itself is definitely on the way. February 2014 is the rumoured release date, and specs to expect include a 5-inch 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution display, Android v4.4 KitKat, a metal body construction and a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset.
- Samsung Galaxy S5
The Galaxy S4 has already taken over the smartphone market, frequently appearing alongside the HTC One and iPhone 5S at the top of best-seller lists. This huge popularity paves the way for the Galaxy S5, which is expected sometime in 2014 with a range of exceptional features. As to what these and the specs of the device will be, at present we can only rely on rumours of a large, high-resolution screen, prodigious processing power and an all-metal body.
- Nokia Lumia 929
Windows Phone has been doing really well over the last 12 months, and Nokia is looking to build on this success with the Lumia 929. It is not clear yet whether this handset will be an exclusive handset on a particular network, or whether it will be available in contracts and pay as you go deals on all networks, but the new Lumia is expected to have some jaw-dropping features. These include a 5-inch HD display and a PureView 20-megapixel camera.
- Sony Xperia Z2
For fans of these smartphones, including the Sony Xperia Z and Z1, there is excellent news. Sony is planning to update its flagship device with the Z2, which it is rumoured will be announced, along with details and specs, in January 2014.
