The word “Mathematics” is nothing less than a nightmare for students who often have to repeat the class just because they couldn’t solve their Maths problems in time. Numbers are just not made for them to play with. You can see them trying to solve the same problem whole day, closed in a small room with full concentration upon the equation that seems to be undisputable. Then suddenly their elder brother enters, solves the problem like eating a piece of cake and laughs at him. We will watch that elder brother later on. But right now you need to understand one thing that Mathematics is like a Jungle; the more you’d try to fight it, the more it’d scare you. The moment you start enjoying it, it’d show you the right way. So are you ready to start the new approach?

I am talking about the latest Android app called Math Panda that has been developed by Arnaud Desombre. The app is compatible with all the devices running Android 2.3 or any later version of the OS.

Math Panda in every aspect has the potential to improve your Mathematical skills. If you play even one session of it every day, the changes will start reflecting automatically. The game consists of four different sections: Classroom, Challenge, Comparator and Concentration. Classroom is the ideal place for beginners i.e. no time limit. You’re not bound to solve the given equation before any of your classmate gives the answer or your teacher starts yelling at you for your slow speed. You’re free to take your time and practice as much as you want. There are all types of questions: addition, multiplication, division and subtraction and there are four choices for each question. The in-app keyboard allows you to enter the answer easily or if the child has still not configured the touch-interface of your device, he can write down the answer with his/her finger or stylus and the app’s Handwriting Recognition (HR) Neural Network will recognise it.

Next we have the “Challenge” section where you have to solve as many questions as possible in the 2-minute time limit. It’s a good scale to measure your speed and accuracy. Remember, a Panda for every right answer and a Pig for every wrong choice. The comparator section actually tests your skill, accuracy and aptitude, all at the same time. You have to solve all the four choices and then select the greatest/smallest number, as per the question asks. There is a certain time limit and it’d push you harder to improve. You can even challenge your friends!

“Concentration” section will compel even the elders to improve their brain-power. In this section, numbers are written all over the board but hidden. When you tap on a number, the number is revealed but only momentarily and then hides back. You have to remember the number and its place and find another similar number. The lesser taps you use, the more are your points.

So overall, Math Panda poses just the right challenges for you aimed at improving your Mathematical skills. The intuitive interface and animated characters make it your child-friendly.

The app is available for free in the App Store. There’s just one in-app purchase for ad-removal. Nothing else!

Pros: intuitive UI; time-unbound classroom for practice; multiple timed-challenges; HRNN; child-friendly; free.

Cons: none.

I will give this app 4.5 out of 5 stars.
