Horror strikes a chord with us only because “it has no face”. We’re afraid of ghosts because we don’t know who they actually are and this element of facelessness is actually the one that scares us out of our bones. There are numerous of such instances being depicted in movies and every time that “what’s next” scene comes with a closed door and the victim opening it slowly, it’s the fastest our heart can beat. But applying the same formula to a murder story seems to be more logical and that’s what the developers of Survive have done.

For all those who don’t know what Survive is, then it’s an iOS app that has been developed by QuoteStork Media. The app is compatible with both iPhone and iPad devices and requires iOS 6.0 or any later version of the OS. This app has also been optimized for iPhone 5, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Now, Survive is a story of escape. It all starts with you waking up inside a dark room of an unknown building and ends with either the murderer finding you and doing what he does best or you escaping the horror building safely. But in either of the cases, it’s going to be a risky-but-adventurous ride throughout.

In this darkest hour, you have just one companion and that’s your iPhone. But due to some technical problem, you can’t call a person neither can you use anything else except camera. One more thing, you’ll receive some tips from an unknown messenger who’s trying to help you. So until and unless that next advice comes your way, you can use your camera and take a picture of the room. Use this picture to figure out the room structure and tap on it to jump to the next room. But if you can’t, then you’ll have to take another picture and find out the correct route. There’s also an orientation option to spot your position inside the building and the direction you’re heading. For this purpose, keep a constant watch on the compass to make sure you’re not rotating in circles.

Have I told you that your phone’s battery is very critical and can last any moment? Have I told you that every time you click a photo, the murderer comes an inch closer to your neck? If I haven’t, then please note them down; they might come useful.

Survive is a gripping tale with an even better screenplay. There’s a constant fear of the murderer striking you from the back and every new picture comes with new hints as well as surprises that’ll make you think of suicide for a moment. The graphics are rusty and bold with the right amount of authenticity to support them. You don’t have to finish the complete chapter in one try; you can continue later from where you left.

The app is available for £0.79 in the App Store. If you can pay more for a movie ticket, then this is the one you’re playing lead in!

Pros: rusty, bold and authentic graphics; surprises at every step; gripping and intense story; addictive.

Cons: none.

I will give this app 4.5 out of 5 stars.
