Everybody loves car racing and I’m not talking about Formula 1. Car racing games that put you on the front seat and make you feel the rush and thrill of driving an ultra-fast car are always enjoyed. They make you experience what many of you might never get a chance to. But after so many years, I think we need a new die to mould our games in. We have already seen what happens when a high-speed car hits an obstacle on the road – it breaks into pieces. But the game in actual doesn’t follow the literal meaning. The game is over as soon as it hits any object. But what if it doesn’t die right there but spills some part of it and the rest of you keep going on? Sounds interesting, right? So let’s start with this idea in mind.

I’m talking about the latest iOS app called Out of Brakes that has been developed by levgen Litvynov. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and requires iOS 7.0 or any later version of the OS.

Out of Brakes is a very unconventional game in every manner. You’re running a car without brakes and therefore once the game starts, your car is going to keep on speeding up and either you’re going to crash or you can slow it down by hitting some specific targets that act as a cushion to your vehicle. But as soon as you enter the race track and the game starts, you’d very soon realize that these cushions are not the only objects awaiting you. The track is almost half-covered with different obstacles and no matter how much you slow down yourself, speed will still increase incredibly fast and you’ll have to keep a strong eye on each obstacle. Some obstacles are destructible and don’t affect your vehicle much while some completely destroy you on the spot as you’re shattered to pieces. The gameplay overall is quite challenging.

Apart from avoiding obstacles, you also have to collect golden cups on the track. Collecting them would give you an opportunity to upgrade to the next-best vehicle. There are many upgrades available as you proceed. You also get free gifts after every high score and these might get you more rewards. But if you’re not able to upgrade to better vehicles with better strength on your own, you can get them via in-app purchases.

The game is very beautiful graphically. The voxel graphics used by the developer work very well and you get an old-school kind of feeling playing this game but it’s not the same. The intentional use of voxel graphics blended with new-age sounds and dynamics give Out of Brakes a new colour of its own that’s different from all the colours it comprises of. The colours are also bright, vibrant and give this app a quality of exuberance.

Overall, I’d say that Out of Brakes is a new take on Car Racing. So don’t forget to give it a try! The app is available for free in the App Store.

Pros: beautiful Voxel graphics; challenging gameplay; amazing soundtrack; upgrades; free gifts; free.

Cons: none.

I give this app 4.5 out of 5 stars.
