Word games are really addictive. Once you start a game of scrabble with your friends, it’s only when the board is out of words that you get up. Maybe because once your brain juices start flowing, you start getting good at it and you don’t want to waste that inertia for no reason. But there are so many intelligent minds around the world that it’s very difficult to design a challenging yet enjoyable game. Sometimes, it’s not just the difficulty level that proves to be the crux of the problem. If you can create a game that appeals to masses, your work is done. So while scrabble has been here for decades I guess, new games must create their own separate room and one such game is in our court tonight. Let’s hear what the judge has to say!

I am talking about the iOS app called Hooked on Words that has been developed by Plasmaworks LLC. You might have heard of the game as it already has more than 1.5 million downloads. But if you’ve not, then it’s compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and requires iOS 5.0 or any later version of the OS. This app has also been optimized for iPhone 5.

The app consists of five modes: 4 single player modes and one multiplayer mode. The 4 single player modes are: standard, timed, collapse and scramble. While the standard mode gives you endless time to think and create words, timed mode has a short tempered limit of just 2 minutes. Collapse mode fills in the void spaces of used letters with new one while the scramble mode keeps all the tiles as they are as if the time has stopped but you still have just 2 minutes. You can learn more about the modes on the iTunes page of the app. What’s new is the multiplayer mode. You can challenge and play against your friends using your Facebook account for the login or you can go against any random player. You’ll be playing for tokens and that’s the only currency that enables you to play multiplayer matches. So you better earn it!

The best thing about this app is its gameplay. You have to swipe your finger past all the alphabets to create a word and therefore you join link by link. The letters must be adjacent to each other no matter on which side. This really opens up a wide number of choices for you and there are so many different options that your eyes just can’t rely on one. The brain starts working at a speed faster than you’ve ever used it at and with the clock ticking second by second, all you’re left with is a headache and thirst for more!

The game is full of possibilities but the only thing that stands in the way is the number of ads displayed during each game. However, there’s a remedy for that under the in-app purchases for $0.99. There are many more in-app purchases as well. But the game is available for free. So do check it out in the App Store now!

Pros: addictive gameplay; 4 single player modes and one multiplayer mode; full of possibilities; game center leaderboards; free.

Cons: Ads.

I will give this app 4.5 out of 5 stars.
