Suppose you wake up after a long sleep and find yourself trapped inside a big four-walled room. It’s completely dark inside and it makes no difference whether your eyes are closed or open. Then suddenly, a gate opens right in front of you and a ray of light comes screeching in piercing through your eyes. Before you could understand the situation, another door opens on your back. One by one, all four doors open in the four walls of the room and without wasting any time, you approach the very first door to get out. But before you could reach the exit, suddenly the walls start rotating. But instead of following the opening, you wait for the next one to arrive at the station and you jump with a perfect timing to get through. But alas! As you get out, there’s another door waiting for you.

I’m talking about the latest iOS app called Escape the Void that has been developed by Patrik Budenz. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and requires iOS 8.0 or any later version of the OS. This app has also been optimized for iPhone 5.

Escape the Void is a puzzle with no ends. You start with a small spacecraft from the centre of the puzzle and reach out in the radial direction. But with every inch of that outward struggle, there comes a wall with gaps in-between. These barriers are rotating, initially slowly but soon pick up sufficient speed to keep you on hold. But you can’t stop; at least not when you’re playing in a time mode. You have to keep moving and therefore you have to make some real quick and agile decisions that’ll have a direct impact on your course of journey. This struggle never ceases as long as you’re surviving it and you have to sustain that pressure all along. Thankfully, there are some power ups to collect which slow down the barriers for some time.

There are 5 different gaming modes and they all add to the variation. Time mode is very challenging as you have to cover the maximum distance in a limited time period. So you’re not only playing to give your best, but to make sure your current best is better than your previous one. The controls make a considerable difference to the gameplay. What we’re used to is using the touch controls on the left/right hand sides to navigate the spacecraft, but here you have to tilt the device in the appropriate direction to move the spacecraft. Though it might seem a little difficult in the start, it’d obviously help you in the later sections once you’ve commanded a good grip over it.

The graphics are neat, simple with nothing superficial and the minimalistic interface adds to a great gaming experience. The animations are smooth and flawless. So overall, this is a game that you can’t afford to miss out!

The app is available for $0.99 in the App Store.

Pros: neat graphics; minimalistic interface; addictive and challenging gameplay; tilt controls.

Cons: none.

I will give this app 4.5 out of 5 stars.
